Sermon Study: “The One & Only” John 10:22-30

INTRO:

Consider the following statement: “The Lord Jesus Christ is the One and Only True God.” Why might people in our world today consider this to be an offensive statement? Was there ever a time in your life when this statement would have offended you?

Read John 10:22-30. The Lord provides three affirmations why He is the One & Only True God.

Affirmation #1: I am God because of the works that I do (vv. 22-25).

Affirmation #2: I am God because of the salvation & security that I give (vv. 26-29).

Affirmation #3: I am God because I am One with the Father (v. 30).

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

Jesus affirms that He is God because of the works that He did. Of the miracles that Christ performed in the gospels, which one seems most powerful to you and why? The Pharisees discounted Christ’s miracles because they were so focused on a temporal or earthly kingdom. What spiritual lesson can we take from this? The false voice of the “heath, wealth & prosperity gospel” is pandemic throughout the world. This movement emphasizes how Christ can serve a person’s material needs over their spiritual needs. Why might this be so appealing to unbelievers? What dangers exist if believers should focus only on physical needs?

Jesus affirms that He is God because of the salvation and security that He gives. All of us have a limited capacity in our “grip strength.” What is so special about being secure in the hands of God? How can reflecting on our eternal security in Christ regularly encourage us spiritually? We live in a world consumed by multiple levels of security yet when it comes to the most important type of security that a person can ever know or possess, eternal security, many don’t express any interest. Why should this motivate us to share the gospel?

Read Colossians 4:2-6. Who can you pray about sharing the gospel with? What “open doors” or when might God give you the opportunity to share the “good news” with them? Are you prepared to share the gospel message with accuracy?

Jesus affirms that He is God because He and the Father are One. Only Jesus can say that He is One with the Father. None have said as Jesus said to Philip, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” Read John 17:1-

5. Take some time to mediate on your relationship with the Lord. Pray (as the Holy Spirit leads) on how you desire to make your relationship with the God even stronger.
