Sermon Study: “The Torture of Unforgiveness” Matthew 18:21-35

INTRO:

The word torture is considered by many a word reserved for “extremists” or a word most commonly connected with “prisoners of war.” How would you define torture?

Another aspect of “torture” is the spiritual aspect and the Bible does have something to say about torture. Start by reading Matthew 18:21-35.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

God’s Word gives us clear instruction on how we can stay free from the torture of withholding forgiveness. How important is having an understanding of biblical forgiveness? Who is instructed to go seek forgiveness in this passage, the offender or the offendee?

Pastor Jon shared a “memory key” to recalling the steps given in Matthew 18:15-20. Can you or someone in the group recall what they were? Why is forgiveness so closely related to repentance? The sermon focused on answering the propositional question “How does God offer forgiveness?” God offers forgiveness by example. God offers forgiveness by choice. God offers forgiveness by mandate. Someone once said,

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover the prisoner was you.” How has this statement been proven true in your life?

TRANSPARENCY QUESTION(S)

Do I have anyone that I need to forgive? Do I need to seek God’s forgiveness for anything this week?

CARE GROUP MEMORY VERSES

Matthew 6:14-15: “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions."
